Soldiers and Sailors Monument
Artist: Monumental Bronze Company
Medium: Sculpture: White Bronze
Year: Dedicated July 4, 1888
Soldiers and Sailors Monument honors those that were lost in the Civil War. The statue depicts Lady Liberty, representing America, along with a soldier and a sailor. Three of the sides are dedicated to Civil War battles while the fourth side represents the USS Kearsage, a Civil War battleship built in Portsmouth. The Monumental Bronze Company made many similar statues from a pre-fabricated mold when the demand was high for creating patriotic statues. Erected just over two decades after the war was over in 1888, the Monument was shortened in 1955 and rehabilitated in 2000.
